RIAA Sees Some Justice

Yesterday a judge ruled that a $675k fine against a student at Boston University was unconstitutional. He had it reduced by 90%, but said that the fine was still quite severe. The claim is that the fine is far too high for the crime. Downloading songs is hardly stealing, but even if it is to be considered stealing, a fine so large for something valued at $1 per item is hardly fair. We’re supposed to be protected from unfair punishments by the Constitution, which, up until now, has mostly been ignored.
The student pointed out that this is still an unpayable fine. Which is funny, because he could probably pay for all the songs he downloaded, even if ‘pirating’ actually is stealing.
Finally, a step in the right direction for this country. Let’s hope more are to come.
