According to an insider who wishes to remain anonymous, Novatel, creators of the MiFi, are working on an “app heavy device” for Verizon’s network. Supposedly, it’s “like the iPhone”, and we can expect it within the first quarter of next year.
What could it be? That’s harder to say, but the possibilities are quire tantalizing.
For example, Novatel’s MiFi wireless card has been placed within an iPad before by a modder. The result was an iPad that could access Verizon’s 3G network. Could this rumor mean that Novatel will be making the wireless card for a future Verizon iPad or iPhone? Maybe. Verizon iPhone and iPad rumors come around a lot, but this is the first one I’ve heard that could have some real validity to it.
“App heavy device” could also mean an Android phone, or even an internet capable device, like Apple’s iPad.
Or, they could be planning to add apps to their MiFi devices, much in the way HP has added apps to internet connected printers. Only, with apps on a wireless access point, you’d be able to control a lot from your network. Maybe stream music, watch movies, check the news and weather, print files, etc. The possibilities are endless when you have a wireless 3G network being broadcasted throughout your home as a WiFi signal.
It’s quite the juicy rumor when you get down to it. It’ll either be Verizon Smartphone (Android or iPhone), or an App-laden internet device. No matter how you look at it, Novatel’s got something new up their sleeves for Verizon, and it’s going to be impressive.
