Prey Turns the Tide on Thieves

I’ve had Prey for my Mac for years, but actually forgot I was using it. Of course, that’s a testament to how out of the way and hidden the service is.

Basically, you download the client. It’s available for Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android phones. After downloading, you set up the service on the website, like how often you want it to check in. If your computer or phone is ever stolen, you go online, sign in, and report it as stolen. From there, the service will use GPS or WiFi triangulation to locate it, as well as take photos of the person using your webcam if you have one, and screenshots. You can even send a message to the thief to warn them that they’re being tracked, and that if the laptop isn’t returned, the police will be notified.

It’s a great way to keep your computer secure, and it doesn’t tax your system. If you use it, there’s a good chance that the police will be able to locate the thief pretty quickly, and, with any luck, return your laptop. Perhaps best of all, Prey is free for up to 3 devices.

Can you think of a reason not to be using it? Because I sure can’t.

Prey can be downloaded here.
Thanks, Lifehacker for reminding me about this service.
