Apple Just Leaked the LTE Apple Watch, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and… the iPhone X

Apple has never been a company to look into the past, always moving forward. However, once before, they celebrated how far they came with a brand new product that encapsulates all the greatness of their past products while simultaneously forging forward. The 20th anniversary Macintosh, released in 1997, came out just a few years before Apple released Mac OS X, a dramatic leap forward in the desktop operating system. It’s a rare moment of nostalgia for Apple before they forge ahead with new technologies. Plus, customers love these creative devices. Something else Apple rarely does? Leak their own products. 2017 seems to be a unique hear for them, because this year, they’re both looking back, and leaking their own products.

For the second time, Apple accidentally released firmware that reveals their upcoming products. Now we know for sure that the next iPhones will be called the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and a new premium model, the iPhone X. Apple also revealed a new Apple Watch, presumably the LTE Apple Watch, as well as a secret feature of the iPhone X: emoji that track (and react to) your face!

Apple Could Skip the ‘S’: Patterns in iPhone Naming Rumors Align

Two supposed leaks or rumors state the possible names for the iPhones won’t follow Apple’s standard naming patterns, though they disagree on the final names for the most hotly anticipated iPhone in years. Previously, it was assumed that there would be three iPhone models released this year. There would be the upgrades to the current models, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus would be replaced by the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, and then there would be the new model, the iPhone 8. However, two new rumors state that Apple will skip the ‘S’ moniker this year, going right to the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus for the 4.7″ and 5.5″ iPhones, respectively, and the 5.7″ with almost no bezel iPhone would instead be named either the iPhone Edition or iPhone X. But which is more likely?

iPhone 8 Reported to Start at $999 for 64GB of Storage

Rumors of the iPhone 8’s price have been generally in the same area. It was going to cost more than the iPhone 7s, likely starting at $1000, and could cost as much as $1,200. In a column for The New York Times, Brian X. Chen reveals that the iPhone 8 will start at $999 for 64GB of storage, citing anonymous sources. Noted Apple aficionado (and likely connected insider), John Gruber, tends to agree with this price point. This means that the 2017 iPhones will likely have the below price structure.

iPhone Model Price
iPhone 8
iPhone 8, 64GB $999
iPhone 8, 128GB $1,099
iPhone 8, 256GB $1,199
iPhone 7s
iPhone 7s, 32GB $649
iPhone 7s, 128GB $749
iPhone 7s, 256GB $849
iPhone 7s Plus
iPhone 7s Plus, 32GB $769
iPhone 7s, 128GB $869
iPhone 7s, 256GB $969

Previous rumorsĀ did state a maximum price of $1,200, which these sources tend to confirm. We’re definitely looking at the era of premium iPhones, but when will it end?

An Accessory Manufacturer Has Confirmed Wireless Charging in the iPhone 8

Credit: Evan Blass, @evleaks

Leaks from third party accessory manufacturers aren’t new. The above photo is from a previous leak from noted leaker Evan Blass, who tweeted out the encased iPhone 8. Clearly he got ahold of some marketing materials, likely from someone who worked at the case manufacturer, and now we have it. Anonymous sources from people claiming to work at accessory manufacturers come in all the time, but those can’t always be trusted. Sure, someone has a good reason to wish to remain anonymous, they don’t want to lose their jobs, but an anonymous source can’t be confirmed as easily. Even with them telling us the same thing, there’s a chance they’re just repeating rumors. However, The Next Web spoke to two confirmed sources. One wished to remain anonymous, which TNW respected, but the other was willing to go on record. Allen Fung, GM at RAVPower, confirmed that the iPhone 8 would have wireless charging, and they’d have wireless charging accessories to sell for the iPhone 8 when it’s released.

Hey, Tim Cook, is that an iPhone 8 in Your Pocket?

Welcome to the strangest leak you’re going to hear about this year! Today, we’ll be checking out Tim Cook’s bulge. Erm, that is, the bulge of his cellphone in his pocket. Check out the photo above, at the phone in Tim Cook’s pocket. It doesn’t quite look like an iPhone, does it? It’s too tall and narrow to be an iPhone 7. However, the iPhone 8 is expected to have a 5.8″ screen, and a new screen size ratio that makes it taller than the iPhone 7, but the same width of the iPhone 7. That means the new iPhone will most certainly be a slightly different shape. In the photo above, it seems obvious that the iPhone in Tim Cook’s pocket bulge is taller than the current iPhone, without being wider. Could this be the iPhone 8?

iPhone 8 Facial Recognition Leak Shows Hardware, Will be Able to ID Faces in ‘Millionths of a Second’

Apple introduced Touch ID with the iPhone 5s. Since then, Apple has used it to unlock devices, unlock apps, enter passwords, and use Apple Pay. The Touch ID sensor has even made its way to the Mac through the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and the iPad as well. However, its days may be numbered, as Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 8 with no physical home button, and, likely, no Touch ID. That means users would have to enter their passcode to unlock the device, every time, and for every payment authentication. That is, unless Apple came up with something new, and it seems like that’s what they’ve been working on. Facial recognition, code named “Pearl ID” in Apple’s firmware, is likely going to completely replace Touch ID on the iPhone 8. There are some large concerns over this, namely speed and security. No facial recognition on the market today is anywhere near as fast as Touch ID, and since Touch ID requires the user to be physically touching the device with a living digit, a visual-only device couldn’t possibly be as secure. The latest leak shows Apple may have at least one solution to those problems: facial recognition speed at least 2 years ahead of anything else on the market.

iPhone 8 is on Schedule, May Only Come in 3 Color Choices, Including a New One

KGI’s Ming Chi Kuo is at it again, and this time, at least one of his his predictions may have already been proven true. Kuo claims the iPhone 8 will be released in September, alongside the iPhone 7s, on schedule. Apple may have had to sacrifice features, such as an under-display fingerprint scanner, but with that aside, they’ve been able to secure production for a timely release. However, we can’t yet know if demand will outpace Apple’s supply, as it seems there may be shortages of Apple’s newest iPhone.

Beyond the usual release date, Kuo claims the iPhone will come in three distinct colors. The iPhone 7s comes in five, jet black, matte black, gold, rose gold, silver, and red. The last is my favorite finish, but is unfortunately marred by a white face plate. Also unfortunate, is that there will be no red iPhone 8, at least not at launch. However, Apple will introduce a new gold finish, a copper gold, which will replace the other varieties of gold. In some way, it’s almost a combination of all the finishes besides silver and black/gray that the iPhone has come in. The iPhone 8 will come in black, white, and copper gold.
